Seed Variety Research

Why are Sydney’s Green Garden container gardening kits and seed products so popular?

Because, we at Sydney’s Green Garden continually strive to select the best seeds that grow well in containers, as well as in our Northland climate. Rest assured we want your container gardens to grow healthy produce that is tasty and as free from chemicals as possible.

As new seed catalogs arrive almost daily, we research to find multiple varieties of a given vegetable. If one variety is more susceptible to fluctuating temperatures, or is prone to fungal disease due to cold, rainy conditions, perhaps another variety will withstand and thrive. If a variety doesn’t thrive in a growing season, new varieties are considered.

Each new growing season ushers in new research and testing at Sydney’s Green Garden. Varieties with prolific growth and great taste are offered in the current growing season, while varieties with poor or mediocre growing performance are discontinued.

Are you ready to have an abundant and tasty growing season? Buy Sydney’s Green Garden container gardening kits and seed packets – kits and seed packets to be available in early April.

Check back soon for updates.

Snowy November Days

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

Since we have colder temperatures and LOTS of snow, it’s a good time to sit by a warm fire, sip some hot apple cider and daydream about gardening.

Hopefully you got your mulch around your trees and shrubs before it snowed. If not, snow is a great insulator – before it melts.

Carrot greens make a tasty treat for pets such as guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils. Place your carrot greens in a plastic bag and they’ll keep in the refrigerator for several weeks. Your pets will be happy!

Enjoy the snow and as many winter activities as you can.

Gather Your Mulch

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

Hopefully you spent time outdoors this past weekend soaking up the autumn sun and walking through fallen leaves. Speaking of leaves, rather than raking up your fallen leaves for disposal, use them in your garden! Fallen leaves make wonderful mulch. However, if you do mulch, keep it away from trees and shrubs until we’ve had a few hard frosts and the ground is starting to freeze – if you mulch too early, mice and other rodents make nice little homes in your mulching material – they will eat the bark from your trees and shrubs and potentially kill your beloved plants. Gather your leaves and pine needles and keep them handy until mid-November – by this time the ground should start to freeze.

Also, if you have not already done so, prepare your garden containers for winter storage. As long as your plants were disease and insect free this past growing season, you can save your soil for next year.

Enjoy a walk around your neighborhood to see how others use leaves and other plant materials they’ve salvaged from this past growing season. It’s always so much fun to see the creativity of others.

Have a great week, and Happy Halloween!!

Tail End of the Garden Season

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

It’s been a plentiful container gardening season! Here at Sydney’s Green Garden we still have some carrots, kale, and Swiss chard growing in containers. We’re nearing the end of the growing season though, so if you have these plants growing you may want to harvest them soon. The same goes for your potatoes – soon the frost will freeze the soil, especially in containers.

Keep track of the seed varieties that grew healthy plants and produced a high yield of vegetables – this makes it easier to choose seed varieties next spring.

Now that most of your containers are resting for the winter, take time to enjoy what is left of your harvest and dream of next year’s container gardens.

Be sure to check back soon – we’ll post some favorite recipes.

Enjoy the next week – it’s supposed to be pleasant and warmish – a good time to work in your yard.

Harvest Aplenty

Hello Sydney’s Green Garden Friends,

We’ve had another great container garden growing season here at SGG!

Harvest your early potatoes now – even though the skins are thin you can enjoy. The vines are probably dying back a bit, but you can leave them in the ground until mid-September.

Peas are finished, but beans are growing strong – be sure to pick when they’re pencil width in diameter.

Lettuces have all bolted but Swiss chard is growing strong and will last into fall a bit.

Sweet potatoes are looking great.

Pickling cucumbers are about finished – here at SGG over 100 jars of pickles were made. Fanfare and other slicing cucumbers are ready to pick now.

Who doesn’t love fresh basil? Pick the leaves and use fresh – or dehydrate them and store them for later enjoyment.

Enjoy the fruits of your container garden harvest!

Pickling Time

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

It’s pickling time. Family and friends anticipate this time of year because we at SGG love to pickle cucumbers and peppers. Even the kids enjoy the pickles – well, maybe not the peppers so much.

You cannot believe the large quantities of produce the SGG container garden has yielded this summer. Beans, peas, lettuces, spinaches have given us great veggies. Our basil, dill, and cilantro have enjoyed a happy growing season as well. However, the squirrels are helping themselves to our potatoes – so, we better start digging soon!

Be sure to post your comments about SGG produce you’re growing – we’re always happy to hear what our customers have to say.

Check back next week – we’ll post new pictures and share more about the luscious veggies our SGG seeds are producing.

Until then, try to visit your garden often, sample your ripe veggies, and enjoy your day.

July 31 Update from SGG

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

Cool weather crops are doing well this summer – hybrid lettuces (Parris Island) are still producing whereas Black-seeded Simpson bolted a few weeks ago. Spinaches are finished and a second crop will be planted the third week in August. Peas are in full swing and beans are coming soon. Carrots and squashes are coming along nicely. Potatoes should be ready for harvest mid-September.

Visit our photo gallery – we’ve posted pictures of some of our great vegetable plants.
