Great Potato Harvest

Hi There,

This was a great summer to grow potatoes. I’m posting some photos of red and blue fingerlings.

One photo with reds poking out of the soil in a round container shows what you can grow in a modest sized bucket. Another gives an idea of how many potatoes you can grow. The blues never yield as much as reds or whites, but they sure are great tasting and so rich in color!

I just can’t help sharing my excitement with you about my container gardens.

PS – Your carrots will taste even better after our first frost – enjoy!

Until next time,

Potato and Onion Harvest

Hello SGG Friends,

Warm weather made summer 2015 an excellent gardening year here in Duluth.

I harvested over 80 Russian Banana fingerling potatoes from a twenty inch round container, and 50 Yukon Golds from a recycle bin. The Yukons were the largest I’ve yielded so far. Two 12 x 26 inch rectangle container yielded a whopping 28 yellow onions!

We’ll post photos of the potatoes.

My Favorite Beans!

Hello Friends of SGG,

Hopefully you’re enjoying the fruits and veggies of your labor! If you kept up on your watering during our dry spell, it’s been a pretty good garden year. Beans and slicing cukes are especially tasty right now.

I experimented with Dragon Tongue, Eureka yellow wax, Blue Lake and Purple Queen Bush beans:

Place beans on baking sheet lined with aluminum foil
Olive oil – drizzled on
Sea salt
Pepper
Fresh herbs – your favorites (I used Basil and Rosemary)
Water – just a little
Balsamic Vinaigrette – your favorite drizzled on
Bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes – they’re still crunchy
My experiment turned out absolutely delicious – I’m looking forward to the leftovers today 🙂

Enjoy your tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, herbs, and everything else you planted, while they’re fresh.

Feel free to share your container garden stories here at SGG – we welcome your feedback!

Just one more week until Labor Day – enjoy your weekend,

Pickles Are In Season

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden,

We’re having beautiful garden weather as long as you’re keeping up on your watering – that’s not always easy during these busy summer days!

Scott put up some pickles last week and they are now curing in the fridge. As the weeks pass he will can a lot more pickles – he loves to give them to family and friends. What a wonderful treat they’ll be in a few weeks’ time – he has some leftover from last year to enjoy, too!

It’s a wonderful time to enjoy fresh vegetables – ah, summer growing season is great!

Time to get out there and water since we’ve had so little rain . . .

Happy 4th of July

Hello Sydney’s Green Garden Friends,

Happy 4th of July! It’s a wonderful time to get together for outdoor picnic and barbeques with family and friends. Your container garden may provide salad and herb makings for your holiday festivities. While I don’t have any potatoes growing, I have some green onions I planted a few years ago that I know will taste great in potato salad.

If you planted SGG vegetable seeds you’re probably excited to see the plants growing. It’s fun and economical to grow your own food.

Scott’s containers are growing gangbusters – check out the new pictures. His potato plants are absolutely awesome – they’re healthy and should yield a great crop. He’s been enjoying spinaches and lettuces for a few weeks now. He loves to let everyone know what’s in bloom and what’s ready to eat, so check back soon.

The container gardens at MIDI Restaurant in the Fitger’s complex are looking pretty good – lettuces look tasty. Peas are climbing, pumpkins and squash are branching out and will soon flower. Potatoes are robust and will soon bloom as well. Carrots are coming along nicely. The chocolate mint is ready to garnish many dishes and drinks. A few tomatoes are ripening. When you’re out enjoying summer on the Lakewalk, be sure to stop by and check out our garden at MIDI.

This week I am enjoying spinaches and lettuces. Since they were planted later than many people plant these crops, they are very tender – but oh, so tasty!

Beans, peas, squashes and carrots are all growing strong – the peas are starting to climb. Basil, dill and cilantro, radishes and beets are all looking healthy, too.

Happy and safe 4th of July to you and yours,

From Your Friends at Sydney’s Green Garden

Father’s Day

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden,

It’s another beautiful week here in the Northland!

Scott’s container gardens are growing great. Spinach, peas, and squashes are up and looking good. Potatoes should be blooming in a couple weeks – it’ll be a joy to see the flowers! Broccoli and Brussels sprouts are growing great as well.

Here at Fitger’s, Midi’s garden is looking great. Peas are really growing! Lettuces are healthy and will be ready for salads before too long. Spinaches are up and should soon take off. Carrots are just up and taking their time – but they’ll be so worth the wait!! Stop by and see the Midi garden for yourself if you’re out and about on the Lakewalk.

Very exciting news: A few days ago I planted SGG containers in Superior – will keep you posted on these delayed plantings. Sunday’s gentle rain helped some seeds germinate – will keep you posted on the progress. I also planted some 2013 and 2014 seeds to test their viability – will keep you posted on my experiment.

There’s still time to plant seeds in containers if you want some fresh from the plant veggies. This weekend is Father’s Day and some quality planting time with dad will create memories for the whole family, so be sure to pick up your Sydney’s Green Garden kits and seeds soon. Shop our online store or visit our three convenient locations here in Duluth (Mount Royal Foods, Engwall’s in Hermantown, and The Bookstore at Fitger’s).

Also, if you have any gardening questions you can email us at: grow@sydneysgreengarden.com; we’d love to hear from you!

Happy Gardening,

Beautiful June Days

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden,

The containers are planted at MIDI Restaurant, located at Fitger’s on the Lake. Soon you’ll be able to order items from the menu that are picked fresh from the garden! It always tastes so much better when it’s fresh, don’t you agree? While you’re out walking Duluth’s Lakewalk eating your Bridgeman’s ice cream, be sure to stop by and check out the garden – if you see Scott out tending the plants, stop and say hi. He’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Most seeds and plants can be planted now – just be sure to watch the weather for frost so you can cover your containers if need be.

Seeds and container gardening kits are still available at Mount Royal grocery store, Engwalls in Hermantown, and at The Bookstore at Fitger’s. We also have our online store up and running. Be sure to contact us if you have any questions: grow@sydneysgreengarden.com

We’ll be updating with current photos, so be sure to check back.

Happy Memorial Day

Hi there friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

Many of you may have put off planting vegetable seeds due to cold and rain. Scott planted spinaches, potatoes, and lettuces a couple weeks ago. They’re not doing much yet since it’s not very warm. Hopefully in the next week we’ll see and feel some sun!

As the planted seeds germinate and we get additional seeds planted we’ll give you updates. Meanwhile, prepare your planters. Have your seeds, container kits, planting soil, bamboo stakes (and mulch if you use it), on hand for that splendidly warm planting day that’s sure to grace us.

We have SGG container gardening kits and seeds ready to ship to you – order at this website. The kits and seeds are also available at The Bookstore at Fitger’s, Mount Royal Fine Foods and Engwall’s in Hermantown. Be sure to stop by soon for the best selection (our carrots sell out fast).

Memorial Day weekend is coming soon – time to wind down, get your planting soil, kits, and seeds all ready to start planting. You don’t want to miss the next beautiful planting day!!

Happy planting and have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day – 2015

Hello Friends of Sydney’s Green Garden

This is a great time of year. Our days are warmer and the fun and excitement begins – it is cool crop planting time! Scott planted his asparagus last week and will begin planting some containers this weekend with spinach and potatoes – and soon peas will be planted.

If you’re looking for a fun and creative gift for Mother’s Day, why not give a SGG container gardening kit? Mom will surely enjoy getting such a thoughtful and useful gift. Also, container gardening takes up considerably less space than a traditional garden plot. So, if the mother in your life likes to be outdoors, get a little dirty, and have fresh homegrown vegetables, give her a Sydney’s Green Garden container garden kit – it’s easy and fun! PS – if mom already has planting containers, SGG has many packets of seed varieties to choose from. You can shop for seeds and garden kits at The Bookstore at Fitger’s, Mount Royal Fine Foods, and at Engwall’s in Hermantown.

Scott will present container gardening workshops for your group or club. He also loves to work with local schoolchildren – he helps them plant a container with some vegetables seeds and they get to keep it and watch it grow. Contact Scott at grow@sydneysgreengarden.com to learn more and schedule a workshop.

Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all mother’s out there – you deserve a special day.
