Container Gardening Workshop Update

Hi,

Last night’s community ed container gardening workshop was a success!  People asked lots of questions; it was a lot of fun.

Two more container gardening workshops are scheduled at Whole Foods Coop – (April 26, 6 pm at the 4th Street location – April 28, 6 pm at the NEW Denfeld location).  Hope to see you there – be sure to register early as it usually fills up fast.

Container gardening kits and seeds are now available at the Bookstore at Fitger’s.  Later this week you can get your kits and seeds at Mount Royal Grocery.

We’ve had unseasonably warm temps and it puts us in the mood to work the soil and plant some seeds – ah, we have to wait a few more weeks though!

Have fun dreaming about gardening,

Your friends at Sydney’s Green Garden

Cold weather testing

I went on vacation from April 6 to April 15, 2012. I left the snowmobile trailer gardent out during that time and the temperature dropped below freezing many times and got as low as 24.7 degrees. On Monday April 16 we had snow which covered the containers . It reached a low of 28 degrees. I put the trailer garden out on April 17. All of the spinaches, lettuces, and peas are still good. the carrots and potatoes have not come up yet.

Snowmobile Trailer Garden Planted March 18, 2012

You can start your garden early by planting cool weather crops in containers on a snowmobile trailer. If it gets below freezing, just roll the trailer into the garage and roll it back out when the temperature gets above freezing. I planted potatoes, spinaches, lettuces, carrots and peas. I have taken the trailer in twice in the last two weeks. I will be harvesting spinach before many people have planted. Its a great way to get an early start on gardening!

Article from the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank Newsletter Winter 2010

Fighting Hunger
One Garden at a Time
Each year, thanks to your support, our food bank
rescues and distributes over 320,000 pounds of
produce for our region’s non-profit agencies and
families in need. But it never seems enough.
Use at our region’s emergency meal programs (food
shelves, soup kitchens, and shelters) and our food
bank’s own direct service programs have increased
37% in the last two years making it difficult to keep
up with demand.
In April, entrepreneur and Duluth resident Scott
Vesterstein approached our food bank with a unique
idea. “What if we helped people grow their own
produce?” he asked. With a donation of twenty
container gardens by Scott and his Sydney’s Green
Garden business our partnership began.
Gene Johnson McKeever, one of our Nutrition
Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS) participants
was one of the first people to receive a garden kit and
soil donated by Engwall Florist, Garden and
Greenhouse.
“I grew my own food right in my backyard,” she said.
“It supplemented my income and I had a sense of
accomplishment, success and happiness. It was a
good project.”
Gene, like many people in our region find it expensive
to eat healthy purchasing fresh produce on a limited
income. “I have especially saved money on spinach
which I eat weekly,” she explained.
She said that Scott’s enthusiasm for gardening was
“contagious.” “It’s rather fun and my garden didn’t
take much time at all,” she said. “My daughter-inlaws
are now also inspired to grow their own gardens
next year and provide more vegetables for their
children.”
If you are interested in sponsoring an individual or
family like Gene next spring, please feel free to
contact our food bank (218) 727-5653 or
email info@northernlakesfoodbank.org.
